Zig Zag Socks

Size: Women's medium, made for size 8 1/2-9 feet. Leg is about 8" around without being stretched or blocked.

Materials:
Cavyshops DK weight superwash merino yarn, 4 oz/280 yards
US 3 (3.25mm) double pointed needles, set of 5

Gauge: 6 spi in st st without blocking


Process:

Cast on 48 stitches, divide between 4 needles- 12 stitches per needle.
2x2 ribbing for 1 inch
Begin zig zag pattern:
Row 1: sl1, k1, psso, k2, yo, k2 repeat to end
Row 2: k
Rows 3-6:repeat rows 1 and 2 twice
Row 7: k2, yo, k2, k2tog repeat to end
Row 8: k
Rows 9-12: repeat rows 7 and 8 twice

repeat pattern until leg is desired length- my sock has 2 1/2 repeats of the pattern in the leg. Make a note of where you stopped the pattern, so that you can continue it on the instep.

Start heel flap. it is done using the stitches on needles 2 and 3 (24 st)
Row 1: sl1, p1 back, combining needles 4 and 3
Row 2: sl1, k to end
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the heel flap reaches the desired length. (usually 2 1/2") end at beginning of a k row.


Turn heel:
Row 1: sl1, k13, sl, k1, psso, k1, turn
Row 2: sl1, p5, p2tog, p1 turn
Row 3: sl 1 k to 1 before gap, sl1, k1 psso, k1
Row 4: sl1, p to 1st before gap, p2tog, p1
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all st are worked (14 st left), end ready to knit

Pick up Gusset:

With needle 4 k across heel stitches, pick up stitches through slipped stitches on side of heel flap, follow zigzag pattern on needles 1 and 2, pick up the same number of stitches on with needle 3 on the other side of heel flap as well as 7 stitches from needle 1.

You should have equal numbers of stitches on needles 3 and 4 and 12 stitches each on needles 1 and 2.

Reduce gusset:


Row 1:
Needle 4: knit to 3 stitches before the end of needle, k2tog, k1.
Needles 1 and 2 continue zigzag pattern
Needle 3: k1, sl1, k1 psso, k to end
Row 2:
Needle 4: k
Needles 1 and 2: continue zig zag pattern
Needle 3: k
repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 12 stitches remaining on each needle. Continue with pattern on needles 1 and 2, and k on needles 3 and 4 until sock reaches 2" from end of the foot.

Toe:
Row 1:
Needle 1: k1, sl, k1, psso, k to end
Needle 2: k to 3 before end, k2tog, k1
Needle 3: k1, sl1, k1, psso, k to end
Needle 4: k to 3 befor end, k2tog, k1
Row 2: k around
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until there are 5 st on each needle- combine needles 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 so that there are10 st on each needle, graft toe and weave in ends.
